Domestic abuse and men

EVEN MEN CAN BE ABUSED BY THEIR PARTNERS. REMEMBER: YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
SPEAKING AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DOES NOT MAKE YOU LESS OF A MAN.
Both men and women can be victims of domestic violence and previously there has been more support for women and it was not believed if a man was getting beaten by their partner.

REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE; OTHERS ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION. YOU CAN MAKE A CHANGE AND ESCAPE.

Female abusers have been stated to have a mental illness of some kind or had negative experiences as a child. This is stated to make them attack against their partners so it can be seen that both men and women abusers have similar causes of their aggression (Hines, Brown & Dunning, 2007). .

·         All this has changed because there has been an increase in awareness of domestic violence against men too. It has been stated by Men’s Advice Line that males are too embarrassed to speak up about being victims of domestic violence.
·         41% of men will not report incidents of abuse by their partner to the police. This is because they are afraid that they will be laughed at and seen as less of a man if they are being beaten by their partners (www.mankind.org.uk, 2010).

Many men do not speak up about being beaten by their partners because they do not realise that other men are in the same situation as them (www.mankind.org.uk, 2010). Men also do not recognize that they have the same rights as women do when they are victim to domestic abuse.

·         Society does not imagine men to be victims of domestic violence by their partners therefore this has led men not reporting incidents of domestic violence (
www.oregoncounseling.org, 2007).

·         Both men and women differ in the ways they perceive and use domestic violence against their partners. Men’s physical violence is much stronger than women.

·         There are always assumptions that women are only the victims of domestic violence whereas this is not the case (
www.oregoncounseling.org, 2007).

·         It can be seen that the government and campaigns are making sure that men speak up about domestic violence and action is taken so this builds male’s confidence. However more action needs to be done to promote speaking up if men are suffering from domestic violence (
www.oregoncounseling.org, 2007).

·         Men are less likely to walk out on their violent relationship because they do not want to leave their children and feel guilty by blaming themselves for the violence.

·         Men may feel that there is something wrong with them that make their partner wants to hit them; this is the same for women who are being beaten by their partners (
www.oregoncounseling.org, 2007). So it can be seen that even men have the same emotional effects of domestic abuse as women.

SPEAK UP ABOUT DOMESTIC ABUSE. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
